St Cenydd school is situated in the town of Caerphilly, South Wales, which is 8 miles north of the capital city of Cardiff. Geographically it is situated in the centre of a basin.

Caerphilly has a
great historical background as it is the site of the second largest Concentric Castle in
Europe. Work started on building the castle in 1268 and in 1270 the work was destroyed
during a dispute between the castle builder, Gilbert de Clare (marcher Lord of Glamorgan)
and Llewelyn. They both claimed that they owned the land on which the castle was built.
Again, in 1271 Gilbert began work on the castle , by this time the dispute had been
resolved with the Kings representatives imposing a truce. Llewelyn died in 1282 ending all
hopes of Welsh independence.

St Cenydd School has
expanded considerably since it was established in 1963. We are now a mixed 11-18
comprehensive school with over 1100 pupils, including 150 in the sixth form. A recent
inspection report drew particular attention to the school's purposeful and supportive
atmosphere, the good relationships between pupils and staff, and our position as a focus
within the local community.
Standards of achievement are rising steadily. Staff development at all levels is a
priority, and our particular interest
in the training of new teachers has led to valuable partnerships with local universities.
We have tried to make the school an attractive and satisfying workplace for both staff and
pupils, and there have been extensive improvements to teaching resources , buildings and
grounds over recent years. In 1995 we received the Prince of Wales Award for a community
project resulting in the creation of a sensory garden.

The school is proud to be the area centre for the hearing impaired and physically disabled, and we are totally committed to the complete integration of these pupils into the school community. A recent example of this commitment was when the school received a Youth Work in Wales Excellence Award in 1995.
